Are you aware of the impact you have on body tissue when repositioning patients?

Often, the focus is on the positioning itself rather than on how we move the patient from one position to another and the amount of tension and load we place on the tissue during repositioning. For instance, we need to consider the load we put on the tissue just by raising the head of the bed and how we can relieve this load again. In this workshop, we will explore, both theoretically and through practical exercises, how we impact the tissue during repositioning. You will have the opportunity to test this on your own body to gain a better understanding of the tissue damage that can occur during repositioning, and we will provide some tips on how to prevent this impact.

In an era where patient-centered care is paramount, effective communication between healthcare providers and patients is essential. This workshop, titled “Plain Language Recommendations and the Production of Plain Language Educational Leaflets for Patients,” aims to demystify complex medical jargon and empower participants to create accessible educational materials.

Attendees will explore the principles of plain language, focusing on clarity, brevity, and appropriateness of content for diverse patient populations. Through interactive discussions and hands-on activities, participants will learn how to identify their audience’s health literacy levels and craft messages that resonate with them.

The workshop will cover practical strategies for designing educational leaflets, including structure, layout, and the use of visuals to enhance understanding. Participants will engage in collaborative exercises to draft their own plain language leaflets, ensuring that they address key health topics relevant to patients.

By the end of the workshop, attendees will not only recognize the importance of clear communication in improving patient outcomes but also gain the skills necessary to produce effective educational materials. The goal is to equip healthcare professionals with the tools to foster an environment where patients feel informed, empowered, and confident in their healthcare journey. Join us to enhance your communication skills and ultimately improve patient engagement and health literacy in your practice.

Workshop Introduction: Collaborative Case-Based Learning in Pressure Ulcer Management

This interactive workshop is designed for professionals from a range of disciplines involved in the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers. Open to just 30 participants, it offers a focused, small-group environment where collaborative learning is at the core.

The goal is to bring together varied clinical perspectives—nurses, physicians, wound care specialists, physical therapists, and others—to explore the complexities of real-world pressure ulcer cases. Participants will be divided into three groups, each assigned one detailed patient scenario. These cases are designed to spark discussion, challenge assumptions, and draw on the diverse expertise in the room.

Each case discussion will be structured as follows:

  • 15 minutes of small-group discussion
  • Followed by approximately 15 minutes of joint discussion with all participants

To guide the case analysis, participants will be provided with supporting materials. These cases reflect the nuanced decision-making required in multidisciplinary care, and in many situations, more than one clinical approach may be valid.

This workshop emphasizes active participation and dialogue between participants and different disciplines approach the same problem. Rather than lectures, the format encourages dialogue, questions, and the exploration of multiple solution paths. By working through complex scenarios together, participants will leave with a broader understanding of both the clinical and collaborative aspects of pressure ulcer care.

If you’re ready to contribute your expertise—and learn from others—this workshop offers a unique and valuable opportunity.

Time: 10:50 AM – 12:05 AM

Effective wound care hinges on timely and appropriate debridement. This interactive workshop explores the diverse methods of debridement, highlighting the importance of tailoring approaches to individual patient needs and wound types. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical foundations behind debridement, including the rationale, wound bed preparation principles, and selection criteria for different techniques.

Through some case-based discussions, attendees will examine a range of clinical scenarios, analysing the outcomes of various debridement methods. Cases will cover, among others autolytic, mechanical, sharp, and biological debridement, focusing on indications, contraindications, and best practice recommendations.

Under expert guidance, the workshop also includes a hands-on component, offering participants the opportunity to practice methods such as sharp debridement, and the use of mechanical tools, enhancing confidence and skill in clinical decision-making and technique execution.

Ideal for wound care professionals across disciplines, this workshop aims to deepen understanding, improve practice, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration in wound management. By the end of the session, participants will be better equipped to assess, select, and perform appropriate debridement strategies tailored to complex clinical contexts.
